Built in 1941 by the American Locomotive Company, 20 Steam Locomotives of massive size rose above all other trains. By 1944, a total of 25 were in service. This mighty Steel Beast is called the Union Pacific ALCO 4000 4-8-8-8-4 "Big Boy" . 25 were made, now only 8 are preserved at museums. The last time this mighty railroad warrior traveled the tracks was in July 21, 1959. With the few that are preserved, this legacy will continue on. Want to see the metallic giant for yourself?
